Svalbard as seen by Zośka – what did I do besides studying?

I have already said, or rather written, a lot about how wonderful the course was and what it involved. I raved about the culture of studying at UNIS, about the respect, kindness, and openness. But Zośka does not live by learning alone, and certainly not in a place like Svalbard! It’s time for a collection of various interesting activities and experiences “after hours” ;)) There will be mountains, courses, exhibitions, films, and much, much more!

Powiedziałam, a właściwie napisałam już wiele o tym, jaki to kurs był wspaniały i co zawierał. Zachwycałam się nad kulturą studiowania na UNIS, nad szacunkiem, życzliwością i otwartością. Ale nie samą nauką Zośka żyje, a na pewno nie w takim miejscu, jak Svalbard! Czas na zbiór różnych ciekawych aktywności i doświadczeń „po godzinach” ;)) Będą góry, kursy, wystawy, filmy i wiele, wiele więcej!

How did I end up in Svalbard and what did I do there? A story about UNIS, molecular ecology, and determination

Some people go on Erasmus to Paris, Heidelberg, or Lisbon during their studies. I almost applied for a semester in Denmark a few years ago, but my first major student exchange was actually… going to the pole. The North Pole.

I mean, the North Pole is a dot in the ocean/on the ice, so not the pole itself, but an archipelago called Svalbard. For many people in Poland, it is better known as Spitsbergen – that is the name of its largest island. But yes, that is where the Stanisław Siedlecki Polish Polar Station in Hornsund is located, that is where polar bears live, and that is where I studied for six weeks. Cool, right?
